  • Brown v. Board of Education still inspires inclusivity in education

    In commemoration of the 65th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, local high school teachers who prioritize inclusivity were awarded with Inclusive Teaching Awards. The 1954 case overturned the “separate but equal” justification for racial segregation in schools and public facilities.

  • Ron Stallworth, the Black Klansman

    His first time in Iowa, Stallworth greeted the crowd with a smile, waving jovially to all levels of the packed theatre. The event consisted of Stallworth discussing his story followed by a short question and answer session with audience members. Afterwards, attendees had the opportunity to see a screening of BlacKkKlansman, the film adaptation of the memoir, at FlimScene later in the night.

    “We all have a purpose. In order to find that purpose you have to do what you love,” Passion practically oozed out of the fabricsas they went down the runway at Foundry Iowa River Landing. Friends and fans of the artists and models filling out the audience, each look was supported with cheers of excitement.

  • FilmScene and Iowa City Pride promote pride all year with LGBTQ films

    FilmScene is promoting acceptance and positive visibility of the LGBTQ community with films showcasing queer stories and queer creators year-round, not just during Pride Month. The theater accomplishes this by regularly screening films created by and about people who are typically underrepresented in mainstream media.

  • Area breweries fight for the title of best beer at Battle of the Brews

    Area breweries will duke it out for the title of best beer at the inaugural Battle of the Brews in Cedar Rapids. Taking place at NewBo City Market, funds from the tasting event will go toward to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which provides support for individuals and families fighting against the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related muscle-debilitating diseases.

  • RAGBRAI training ride promotes Iowa City biking

    Big Rove, a new 36-mile addition to the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa training series, took 1,500 bikers between local breweries. The route started at Big Grove in Iowa City, continued to Reds Alehouse in North Liberty, and reached its farthest point at Big Grove in Solon before looping back to Iowa City following its original path. Each stop on the ride featured food, drink, and live entertainment.
