  • We departed from the southernmost tip of Argentina, the boat docked in the small port town of Ushuaia, ominously nicknamed “The End of the World.” It was a two-day trip across the Southern Ocean to the Antarctic Peninsula through the notorious Drake Passage, known to be so rough that one in five passengers experiences seasickness. Brandishing ourselves with armfuls of pressure point bracelets and all the Dramamine we could take, we prepared for the worst.

  • Notre Dame is on fire and all I can think about is ice cream. Melting chocolate dripping down the front of a white t-shirt. My small frame laughing at my sister’s embarrassment while my mother frantically wipes at the stain on the previously clean garment. Fellow tourists watching with pitiful eyes. A memory conquered by a frozen treat rather than the ancient cathedral we were waiting in line to enter.

  • This is: Picadilly Circus — the doors slid open and the woman with the over-sized briefcase shoved her way into the car, accidentally knocking the blonde-haired girl in the side of the head, sending dazed little steps stumbling toward the doors, a size three ballet slipper now caught in the ridge between the train and the platform.
